Rainbow Fish ( 2024 )

Van Buren Elementary

Here is a display I created for Kindergarten and First Grade's Rainbow Fish projects! In this lesson, students were inspired by Marcus Pfister's The Rainbow Fish story, learning about kindness, landscape, tracing, and collage. On Day 1, students created Coral Reef Landscapes with oil pastels and tempera paint, learning about the wax-resist method. On Day 2, students created Rainbow Fish by tracing, collaging, and embellishing with oil pastels. Early finishers got to collaborate and create the hanging fish, using liquid watercolor to decorate the scales.

Here is the display I created for Fourth grader's Memory Squares! Throughout this lesson, students utilized artistic elements shape, color, and line to portray an abstracted memory.

Throughout their creative process, students persisted through a three-day lesson consisting of drawing, wet felting, and needle felting.

This project involved students in Studio Habits of Mind such as engage, persist, and developing craft in abstraction and fiber arts.

Here are some displays I created for Third, Fourth, and Fifth grader's T.A.B. Projects!

TAB, short for Teaching for Artistic Behavior, embodies a philosophy that prioritizes nurturing critical thinking skills and fostering an appreciation for the artistic process among students. Embracing the notion of learning through trial and error, TAB encourages children to embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth. Furthermore, it advocates for providing students with the autonomy to pursue art forms that resonate with their individual interests and passions, rather than confining them to predefined assignments dictated by the teacher.

TAB offers students access to diverse art centers such as drawing, painting, collage, jewelry, origami, and sculpture. This choice fosters the development of artistic behavior as children explore and create with different media across these centers.

Here is a display I created for Second Grade's Emotions Paintings projects! In this lesson, students focus on emotions, color, line, shape, and repetition. After reading The Color Monster by Anna Llenas, students chose a particular emotion: Disgust, Sadness, Happiness, Fear, Anger, or Love. Once chosen, students express this emotion through repetition of color, line, and shape.

Here is the display I created for Second Grade's Needle Felt Mittens lesson! In this lesson, students envision their compositions and develop their craft in fiber arts. After reading Jan Brett's The Mitten, students design a mitten unique to their personal interests in color and shape with oil pastels. After creating this drawing, students use it as a reference, using wool roving to needle felt their designs.

Bowling Green State University: Saturday Art Program

Here is the display I created for Third and Fourth Grader's Expressions Tapestry for the BGSU Saturday Art Program! Over the course of eight weeks, students would begin the first fifteen minutes of class time with the task of collaboratively adding to a community tapestry. As students came into the room, they immediately grabbed a smock and began without further instruction. When the time for painting was done, students would begin a clean-up routine, and go to their tables to begin the lesson.

As a teacher, I found that the class periods that started with this activity ran more efficiently than the classes that did not begin with painting. This transitional activity allowed students to express any emotions felt prior to class, and turn their attention to art-making. Furthermore, this activity served as a reflective bell-ringer that allowed students to get into the “right frame of mind” for learning. When students were asked how they felt while painting, the most common response was that the activity was “calming.” Lastly, this activity deals with topics such as SEL, community arts, and collaboration.

Here is a display I created for Seventh and Eighth grade's Cartoon Architecture mural project! In this lesson, students were inspired by Dr. Seuss's cartoon art-style, learning about showing space, dimension, and layering. Students each sourced a photo of a building from their hometown: Rossford, Ohio, and drew it in the cartoon Dr. Seuss style. Then, as a class, we collaged each of the buildings to create a mural of Rossford!

Here is a display I created for Art 1's Multimedia Dots and Art 2's Radial Weavings projects! In these lessons, students celebrated Pi Day through creating circular artworks. After learning about radials and analyzing artwork from Wassily Kandinsky, students created a plethora of radial artworks to cover the hallways!

Here is the display of Art Club's Starry Night Tapestry! This project consisted of a collaborative painting completed by all of Art Club; starting out with sourcing an artwork, tracing the projection, and painting it as a group! The club decided to create a parody of Van Gogh's Starry Night, adding their own twist of a pink town among purple hills.

Here is the display I created for Third and Fourth Graders' Personality Collages for the BGSU Saturday Art Program! In this lesson, students analyze artworks from contemporary artist Emily Franz, and create a paper collage inspired by their unique personalities. Throughout the lesson, students embarked on a journey of self-discovery as they carefully curated images and explored techniques such as layering, contrast, and variety to bring their collages to life.

Here is the display I created for Third and Fourth graders' Emotions Paintings for the BGSU Saturday Art Program! In this lesson, students constructed oil pastel portraits of a partner expressing a chosen emotion. In this project, we focused on artistic elements color, value, and space. While drawing, students explored Studio Habits of Mind such as express, reflect, and development of craft in oil pastel techniques.

Glendale Feilbach Elementary

Here is the display I created for Kindergarten and First Grade's Line-N-Play projects! In this lesson, students created personalized Game Boys using different line types. Following Lowenfeld’s Stages of Development, this lesson aids in helping students in the Preschematic and Scribbling stages to understand how the artistic elements, specifically line, can be used in a composition. While creating, students evaluated relationships between different line types and developed an abstract background. Students then illustrated their favorite game on a separate piece of paper, cut it out, and pasted it onto their Game Boy along with control buttons.
