Chair
As a lifelong student, it's no wonder I spent 43 years with Macomb Community College. My career at Macomb started before ever realizing the impact MCC would have on me. The time spent on campus as a young high school graduate sparked an interest I never could have expected. Attending classes at Macomb from 7 am until noon or 1 o'clock and then working part-time in the Student Activities office quickly resulted in a strong desire for more of what I was enjoying.
Upon graduating with an AA degree from Macomb and while continuing my education, I worked as a full-time admin in design technology, student activities, and the business office. After earning a BBA from Marygrove College, I left Macomb and worked at Oakland Community College as the Director of Administrative Services at the Southeast Campus. During this time, I was also pursuing a graduate degree at Central Michigan University. While at OCC I taught as an adjunct professor in the Business area at Macomb. An opportunity back at Macomb presented itself so I came back to Macomb as the associate dean in Business Administration and then in Information Technology. In 1995, I started teaching full-time in Business Administration and Information Technology.
Being a student is what motivated me while I was working and continues to motivate me in retirement. Since retiring in December 2018, I've become a student again taking classes on how to knit, how to weave, and how to create beautiful designs with my Husqvarna Epic 2 embroidery machine. I'm also a member of the Shelby Gardeners which offers additional learning opportunities.

Brenda Alward
Secretary
Hi! I’m Brenda Alward and I am honored to be the Secretary for the Macomb Retiree Association. My claim to fame is that I once had dinner with Sir Graves Ghastly.
I love music. One of my favorite songs is “All My Life’s a Circle” by Harry Chapin. While this song has held true in many areas of my life, none more so than in my career.
In 1977 a simple, country girl began as a student at Macomb Community College. I was scared and unsure of myself, but by the time I graduated in 1980, I was a strong and confident individual. I went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Oakland University, and later a Master of Arts in Reading and Language Arts from OU as well.
In my teaching career I was a preschool teacher, child care center assistant director and director, and finally settled into teaching Kindergarten, which I taught for 20 years. Then, a whole new chapter opened up.
I came back to Macomb in January of 2000, as an adjunct in the Early Childhood Studies program. In 2006 I was hired full time. For four years I taught Kindergarten by day, and college by night.
While at Macomb, I was part of a team who developed the “Introduction to Education” course for those who wanted to become K-12 teachers. I taught this for 17 years. As part of an Innovation Grant, I was able to develop an Open Educational Resources textbook for this course. I have also been involved in MMII, Achieving the Dream, Credit for Prior Learning Committee, several hiring committees and served on the Senate for several years.
I retired in July of 2023, and now my circle continues in this new role. I’m excited to be a part of the Macomb Retiree Association and I look forward to helping give back to the college community that gave so much to me.
