The inside of one's mind is not always a sensical place. It's so easy to be so mean to ourselves and belittle ourselves. When I was 19, I found myself at home one day, telling myself in the mirror all the reasons I wasn't "pretty." I just so happen to be in a poetry class and, as a theatre kid would, decided this little controversy in my head would make a pretty amazing spoken word piece. After it's initial reading with the class, I decided it was too theatrical to be kept in a purely poetic form, and I adapted it to be a piece for two non-binary identifying actors, with multiple moments of movement/choreography.Â
It was first performed with the East London Theatre Collective's New Work Festival in November 2024. And then restaged again at the Queer Youth Festival at The Source/Stratford Youth Zone in Stratford, London. Future stagings are TBC.
