One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows, Little Shop of Horrors is a deviously delicious sci-fi smash musical that has devoured the hearts of theater-goers for over 30 years. The meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down-and-out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it, BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey’s out-of-this-world origins and intent towards global domination! (Taken from Frauenthal Center)
Excerpt from Concept Summary:
I believe this show is the most enticing and enjoyable when done incredibly honestly. It’s some of my favourite Menken and Ashman work. The music and the book speak for themselves even without the spectacle so everything we do must be generated from a place of realism in this hyper-realistic world. Which is fancy for saying, we are not playing up the camp for this production. This is not a cartoon. This is a reality that is real to these people and the concept of a human-eating plant is absolutely terrifying and should be frightening to the audience.
This show does not change the world. We are not taking on the task of educating people with this piece. We are here to tell an honest story, entertain the masses, and create a nurturing and exciting environment for our cast and team! The ultimate message of this show is we are all susceptible to greed and desire but we have to try to be happy with what we have and not prioritize our own advancement over humanity and decency. “But whatever they offer you, don’t feed the plants”
