Construction began in 1939 but it was not until 1944 that the emergency surgery center was completed. With the mission of providing emergency care services for injured civilians, this place is also used to care for and hide soldiers.
The head nurse of the Hungarian Red Cross, Countess Edelsheim-Gyulai Ilona, was present at the opening and worked as a nurse in the hospital. The hospital has about 40 doctors, nurses, and assistants.

During World War II this place was fully utilized as it played a particularly important role in the city due to its unique sheltered location.
In 1937, Air Raid Alarm Control Center “K”, which controlled air raid sirens in the castle area, was the first room in the underground network designated for military purposes. Since the Castle District contained Hungarian government offices, the Minister of War and Karoly Szendy, the mayor of Budapest, decided that a functioning hospital should also be built in the existing cave structure.
