우리는 해양동물다양성연구소(MABC)입니다.

우리는 극피동물(바다나리, 불가사리, 거미불가사리, 성게, 해삼)의 분류와 계통을 연구합니다.

오방사대칭이라는 독특한 체제와 5억 년의 화석 기록을 가진 이 동물들은, 해양 생물다양성이 어떻게 만들어지고 유지되는지를 들여다보는 창입니다.

우리의 접근은 통합적(integrative) 입니다.

골편과 외부 형태를 다루는 형태학과 분자 데이터를 함께 사용해 종을 구분하고, 계통을 복원하며, 새로운 종을 기재합니다.

동시에 현장 기반입니다. 조간대에서 심해까지, 동해·남해·제주·독도 해역을 직접 조사합니다.

우리는 하나의 표본을 배 위에서 논문까지 끝까지 따라갑니다.

채집과 현장 기록, 해부와 골편 관찰, DNA 추출과 계통 분석, 표본 등록과 기재문 작성까지,

모든 과정이 우리 손을 거칩니다.

국립해양생물자원관·국립생물자원관·한국연구재단 등과 함께 국가연구과제를 수행하며, 우리가 등록한 표본은 다음 세대 연구자에게 영구히 남습니다.

We are the Marine Animal Biodiversity Center (MABC).

We study the systematics and phylogeny of echinoderms (sea lilies, sea stars, brittle stars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers).

With their five-part body plan and a fossil record reaching back half a billion years, these animals are a window into how marine biodiversity is generated and maintained. In Korean waters, many of them still have no name.

Our approach is integrative,

linking classical morphology (ossicles, external characters) with molecular data to delimit species, resolve phylogenies, and describe new taxa.

It is also field-based: we survey habitats from the intertidal zone to the deep sea across the East Sea, South Sea, Jeju, and Dokdo.

We follow a specimen the whole way, from the boat to the published paper.

We collect and document in the field, dissect and examine ossicles, extract DNA and build phylogenies, register the voucher, and write the description ourselves. Every step passes through our own hands.

Our nationally funded projects with MABIK, NIBR, and the NRF sustain this work, and the specimens we register remain available to researchers for generations.
