Mayan

Mayan makes films about how people are misread — by systems, by language, and by each other.

She is fascinated by the gap between who someone actually is and the story the world tells about them: what gets labelled, what gets overlooked, what gets inherited, and what happens when those stories become impossible to live inside.

Her work draws from psychology, mythology and lived experience to explore identity, gender, neurodivergence, relationships, power and the systems that shape human behaviour. She is interested in contradiction rather than certainty, and in characters whose inner worlds are more complicated than the categories available to describe them.

Mayan works across narrative film and documentary, bringing together writing, directing, producing, editing and story development. She approaches filmmaking as both an artist and an organiser — equally interested in the emotional architecture of a story and the practical machinery required to bring it into the world.

Through her work, she hopes to make people look again: at each other, at themselves, and at the systems they have learned to accept as normal.
