The ancient Maya, a diverse group of indigenous people who lived in parts of present-day Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, had one of the most sophisticated and complex civilizations in the Western Hemisphere. The Maya civilization lasted for more than 2000 years. They made remarkable scientific achievements in astronomy, agriculture, engineering, and communications. Most famously, the Maya of the southern lowland region reached their peak during the Classic Period of Maya civilization (A.D. 250 to 900) and built the great stone cities and monuments that have fascinated explorers and scholars of the region to this day.
