Cinco de Mayo (SIN-ko day MAH-yo), Fifth of May in English, is a Mexican holiday that celebrates Mexico winning the battle against France in the Battle of Puebla. This battle started due to Mexico's debt to France and other European countries. ( Those countries came to an agreement with Mexico. ) Mexico was victorious with some help from the United States and won with the French losing 500 soldiers and Mexico only 100. Although the holiday is more popular in the U.S.A. than in Mexico, people celebrate by participating in traditional dances and listening to Mariachi music.
Fun Fact: The French attacked the morning of May 5th, 1862, and they had retreated by that same afternoon.
