We are delighted to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our Boulder 4-H members who are graduating high school this month! Your time in 4-H has been marked by your dedication to developing your leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, and we are so proud of the incredible young adults you have become. We know that the lessons and values you've learned in 4-H will stay with you for life, and we can't wait to see how you will use them to achieve great things in your future pursuits. We wish you all the best as you take the next steps on your journey. Once again, congratulations on this wonderful achievement!
-Your 4-H Team
Here's a look at our 4-H Members who are graduating High School in 2023
Charlotte "Charley" Helgans
2023 will be Charley's 6th year in 4-H. She started by exhibiting her art at the county fair, then progressed to the dog, horse, and market beef projects over the years. This year, although her last in 4-H, she is trying a brand-new project.... swine!
Charley was on the state conference- winning Parlipro team, competing with her horse at the Colorado State Fair
All the friends she has made along her 4-H journey. She is grateful for her years of fun, leadership, and learning in 4-H.
Charley plans to study engineering at a CalPoly.
Julia Ruddick
My name is Julia Ruddick and I have been in 4-H for seven years now, and have shown pigs at boulder county, selling them in the Jr. Livestock Sale, and participating in the 4-H gymkhana this year. While in 4-H I have learned many new things every year that I will take with me my whole life, all while having fun and meeting new people who have similar interests as me. Though I am sad that my 4-H years are coming to an end I am excited to start a new chapter in my life, starting with studying animal science at Laramie County Community College.
Isaiah Schieffer
I have been in 4-H for nine years and throughout those years I showed cattle, horses, swine, lambs, and dairy goats.
I am going to the College of the Ozarks where I will study Video Production, Theology, and Biblical Studies. I will also be in an Army program where I will graduate as a commissioned officer.
Moriah McQueen
“Is your glass half empty or half full?”, asked the mole. “I think I’m grateful to have a glass,” said the boy.
-The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse
Over the past 10 years of my participation in 4-H, I have been able to learn so, SO very much. However, I am walking away with one keyword. The word is “gratitude.” I haven’t had a program impact me quite the way 4-H has. Between the laughs, the cries, the highs, the lows, and everything in between, I am walking into this next phase of my life equipped with useful skills I have acquired through this amazing program. Furthermore, I am walking away with the realization that I am called to live for a purpose greater than just myself. While it is great to make improvements, meet goals, and accomplish different milestones, there is always room for improvement. Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching. As I am moving into this next phase of my life where I will be attending Texas A&M University as a member of their D1 Equestrian Team, the Boulder County 4-H program will forever hold a special place in my heart. In the meantime, I urge you to soak up the good times, make the best of the bad times, and enjoy everything in between. Thanks and Gig’ Em’ Aggies!
-Moriah McQueen
Nora Tayefeh
Nora participated in a variety of projects throughout her 10 years in 4-H: entomology, fiber goats, dog, poultry, shooting sports, and horse. As she reflects on her 4-H experience, she is grateful for the lifelong friends and connections she has made. She is also very thankful for her club and county-level leaders and the vast volunteer network, who guided her in so many ways to explore her interests in depth which helped lead her to pursue a degree in the sciences. She has learned valuable lifelong skills such as leadership, critical thinking, self-directed inquiry, animal husbandry, archery, and training dogs, to name a few. There are so many opportunities for project exploration and leadership in 4-H. For Nora, it has been a very rewarding experience and she hopes all 4-Hers are inspired to pursue their interests to the fullest extent possible!
Congratulations to Nora on being selected as a recipient of a 2023 Boettcher Foundation Scholarship! She will attend Colorado State University in the fall, majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Entomology.”
Jett Hinze
Jett has shown market beef for the last two years and is currently working with his animals to hopefully win Grand Champion in his third and final year. He has enjoyed being part of the club Chutes and Boots throughout his time in 4-H.
Jett plans to study business management at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Conor Zaruby
Joining 4-H has been a great and positive experience for me. I joined it as a way to connect with peers that held similar interests and were part of a good community. I’ve met new people, seen a whole new side of shooting sports, and just genuinely enjoyed myself while I was at it. I’m kinda regretful that I didn’t join sooner but even though I’ve only been a part of it for a year, it has changed me for the better.
Next year I will be studying Applied Math and Data Science at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada.
Lucie Dolenc
Lucie started 4-H when she was 8 years old! Since then she has shown rabbits, poultry, lambs, swine, and goats. She has been the historian, president, and secretary of her club - Goats and Galore. One of her favorite memories with 4-H is walking in the Boulder County Fair Parade. She would like to thank her parents, club leaders, project leaders, and fellow 4-H members for their support!
Lucie plans to attend Dordt University to study Agricultural Missions.
Mackenzie Weber
I have been in 4-H for 6 years participating in the horse project. I have shown at both the county and state levels, and I am a level 4 rider in English, Western, and Showmanship. I have been treasurer, Vice President, and am currently the President of Easy Riders. I have also been a member of the Horsebowl and Hippology Teams, where I have had to opportunity to compete in several national-level contests.
Starting in the fall, I will be attending the University of Colorado Boulder where I will major in Biomedical Engineering.
Sarah Shehigian
Sarah is completing her ninth year in 4-H. She has had the privilege of showing alpacas, goats, rabbits, poultry, cavies, and now dogs. She is grateful to Boulder County 4-H for the opportunities she has been given as a youth member.
Sarah is headed to CSU in the fall to study exploratory environmental science.
Sheridan McBee
I’m Sheridan McBee and have been in 4-H for 13 years. I am graduating from Mead High School and my current projects are dogs, horses, and archery along with 4 market lambs through FFA. I’ve been in every officer position multiple times (except secretary as I'm not a great writer) and was the reporter for the St. Vrain Valley FFA chapter. My younger self would be shocked to know I can talk in front of a crowd and this year I currently serve as our Boulder County Fair Lady in Waiting and will be the 2024 Queen.
This fall I will be attending Aims Community College with a major in welding. I’ll always cherish the memories and friends I’ve made along this journey and I can’t wait to come back to help in the coming years.
Carly Borchers
Hello, my name is Carly Borchers I have been in 4-H for 7 years. I have grown so much as a person and 4-H member, when I first joined, I was a very shy person who didn’t talk much and kept to myself. After a year I realized I can be myself around all 4-H members and started making friends, talking about my projects, and encouraging others to join.
The 4-H community has been so kind to me from the leaders to the volunteers and of course the members. They can always bring a smile to my face even if I’m having a rough day. 4-H has taught me how to take care of my animals, how to show them, and how to treat animals with care and kindness. Thanks to 4-H I have been able to discover this part of myself.
I have met such great people and friends through my projects, Thank you all for being so kind to me.
Sophia McBee
Hello, I'm Sophia McBee, I have been in 4-H for 13 years and the experiences I’ve had are irreplaceable. I cannot be more thankful for my 4-H leaders that helped me along the way…Clare, Heather, Curt, Fay, Anne, Janet, and especially my Mom and Dad, who have been leaders that have molded me. I have created some of my longest and strongest friendships over these many years and I have gained valuable leadership and community citizenship skills. From showing bunnies, goats, and dogs as well as competing in archery, leathercraft, ceramics, and early on in cake decorating, I have truly enjoyed it all and will miss this huge part of my life.
I am very excited about my future as I’m graduating from Niwot High and will be attending Clark University in Massachusetts and majoring in Biology!
Ava Wright
I have been homeschooled since 1st grade alongside my younger sister, Audrey. I have competed in 4-H in the Horse, Breeding Sheep, and Market Lamb projects plus several rodeo associations since I was 11. I am finishing my 4-H career as the 2023 Boulder County Fair Queen and doing so has uncovered my passion for horses and mentoring kids.
This fall, I will attend Tarleton State University in Stephenville Texas where I will compete on the Stock Horse Team and study both Agricultural Communications and Animal Science Business with an Equine Certification. My goal with these skills is to raise and train horses, be a social media manager, and mentor youth.
I would like to thank my family and friends for their inspiration, support, love, and laughter. I am excited to embark on the next leg of my adventure and stand by the opening quote in the Clone Wars Season 4, Episode 1, “Our actions define our legacy.”

COMMUNITY SERVICE- SHOOTING SPORTS
April was a busy month for the Shotgun and 22 members fulfilling Community Service activities at the Berthoud Gun Club.
April 8th was the grounds clean-up day. 4-H Volunteers were able to complete these tasks:
raked
picked up trash
picked up shell casings
picked up debris from all three level ranges.
April 22nd was a cool but pleasant day repairing the fence. Special attention was placed on the second level where the 22 shooters shoot. There the fence had been down in several places and in disarray for a few years. Between the 8th & 22nd Berthoud Gun Club members dug and reset new posts in preparation for the 22nd to upright and repair the downed fence with minimal cost.
4-H & Berthoud Gun Club volunteers secured or reattached pickets or moved the older picket panels to the new posts to fully upright the entire southern fence. A slight error in ordering enough pickets as a small opening remains, but overall the fence is standing once again.
WE HAVE THE BEST VOLUNTEERS- CONGRATULATION KENDRA!

FOODS AND NUTRITION TIPS
The 4-H Youth Healthy Habits survey, commissioned by the National 4-H Council, polled over 1,500 youth between the ages of 13-19 nationwide and found that:
68% satisfy their hunger with junk food because it’s more accessible to them at school than healthy food.
66% spend more time deciding what they want to watch on Netflix and YouTube than thinking about what they eat.
85% say junk food is more accessible and cost-effective, which usually drives decision-making for their families and friends.
Learning how to make healthy snacks and meals will help you stay healthy and beat these statistics. The 4-H website has practice recipes and tips. Be sure to register through 4-h.org to see more information on these activities online. The below is just a sampling, there is a lot to learn!

DOG NEWS
5 Ways To Keep Your Dog Safe In Spring
By: Alessia Daelli - 4x4 Dog Club Reporter
Poisonous plants look delicious to your dog- Dogs think that plants, such as tulips, are beautiful and delicious treats but if digested they can be very destructive to the digestive path. Other poisonous flowers include oleander, azaleas, chrysanthemums, and daffodils.
No mid-walk grass snacks - When your dog is playing in the yard or you are on a walk you shouldn’t let them nibble on grass due to the dangers. Grass, like flowers, looks very tasty to dogs. The fertilizer on grass can be toxic to dogs. You should also take care when fertilizing your own yard and make sure that it is pet-friendly fertilizer, to keep your pup healthy and safe.
Splashing in puddles not for drinking - Puddles have many surprises that can harm your dog. They may have dangerous bacteria that can harm your furry friend's digestive tract.
Insect issues- Fleas and ticks are one of the biggest problems that dogs have to face in the warmer seasons. Make sure to treat your dogs with fleas and tick medication soon.
Bug spray can be deadly to dogs - Bug spray is a great thing in the summer to keep bugs away from you, but it's fatal to dogs. If bug spray is ingested by your dog the side effects can cause death. When spraying yourself with bug spray make sure that you are in a separate area, away from your dog to avoid any issues. All insecticides should be stored in a cabinet that your dog can’t get into or reach.
