History of Max

The name of Max was given to this new town after some controversial arguments.  It was, at one time, to be name Junction, or Junction City.  The new town was named Max, which was the name of the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Freitag.  Mr. Freitag was the first Postmaster.  The first post office to serve this community was on the farm of Paul Freitag.  As the story goes, when the people would go to the Freitag Post Office to get their mail, Max, a little boy at the time, would ask the people if they came to his post office to get their mail.  The people got into the habit of calling it Max's Post Office and that is the name that stuck when it was moved to the new town site.  "A Century in the Heartland" 2006

The Max Basketball team was really named by a neighboring town when in the early 30's Max was victorious over them.  The opponents, in frustration, called the Max team those "Mad Russian Cossacks" due to the many Russian names on the roster.  From this incident came the "Max Cossacks."  "A Century in the Heartland" 2006
