Mauricio Espinoza

Welcome to my website!

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Development Economics at Wageningen University and a researcher at the Group for the Analysis of Development (GRADE) in Peru.

My primary research interests lie in Development Economics, Agricultural Economics, and Impact Evaluation. My work mainly focuses on three interconnected areas: (1) the long-term effects of historical inequality, land relations, and land reform on economic development and human capital formation; (2) the transformation of food systems, with a focus on food markets, food safety, and the role of small-scale commercial agriculture and agrifood enterprises; and (3) rural development, including agricultural productivity, collective action, and the evaluation of poverty-alleviation and social protection programs.

My research is empirical and interdisciplinary, combining historical analysis, spatial data, and modern econometric techniques. I frequently work with panel datasets, program evaluation designs (both experimental and quasi-experimental), and geospatial data to investigate development challenges from both contemporary and historical perspectives.

My work is centred in Latin America, where I have gained extensive research and field experience in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, and Haiti. I have also participated in projects in Africa (Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and Tanzania) and South Asia (Bangladesh). Over the years, I have collaborated with government agencies, academic institutions, and international organizations, including the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), University of Chicago, Open University, University of Sussex, University of Bath, Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Royal Veterinary College, Latin American Center for Rural Development (RIMISP), Peru’s Ministry of Agriculture, and the World Agroforestry Center.
