How Can You Make A Meme?
Copyright
Copyright is a law, that was created to make sure authors are given the proper credit for their work. "Copyright protects poetry, movies, streaming audio and video, video games, plays, paintings, sheet music, recorded music performances, novels, software code, sculptures, photographs, choreography, and architectural designs" (Filbert, 2013). In order for copyright laws to trigger, it must be a fixed form of expression, original, and be a result of creative effort.
Copyright Laws do have their exceptions, and those exceptoins are called "fair use." This allows free speech as long as it is for teaching, criticism, comment, research, scholarship, or news reporting. There are four factors that help determine whether something is fair use or not.
purpose/character of a use
nature of the copyrighted work
amount used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
the effect of the value of the copyrighted work.
(Copyright, 2023).
Creative Commons
If "fair use" seems like a bit much, you can use sites such as Creative Commons for help. Creative Commons is a website that allows creators to access to thosands of works, as well as allowing creators to upload thier own content. As long as attribution is given. This is not the only website like this though. For me, it took a while to figure out, so I will be looking for one that works better for me.
