My goal in teaching is to spark enthusiasm for both linguistics and critical thinking.

I teach courses in introductory linguistics, semantics, pragmatics, syntax, morphology, typology, linguistic fieldwork, and the interfaces of these subjects.


My teaching philosophy includes:

  • In depth guidance through modern theoretical frameworks and the intent behind them

  • Diverse language data in the classroom, including data from my own research and field work and data that students contribute from languages that they are familiar with

  • Investment in pedagogical research, with emphases on hands-on learning, development of critical thinking skills, and evaluation systems that best serve students

  • Building a rapport with students to encourage participation, investment in the course, interactions with the material beyond what is required, and original student work

  • Support for my students' mental health and well-being

  • One-on-one mentorship and advising

  • Overt enthusiasm for both my course material and my students
