Summary: Put in place interactive flash cards on Problem-solving & Innovating tools so that ATL students can use them as a ready-reckoner to learn the art and rigor of problem-solving & innovating in the ATL at their own pace.
Atal Tinkering Lab is a space where students get to not only tinker, but also innovate with their ideas. To innovate, one has to have strong problem-solving skills. However, most students don't understand what it takes to convert their idea into an innovation. Even though they are exposed to the 5-stage Design Thinking process of problem-solving, they still didn't understand how to "research" the problem domain, how to "empathize" with user needs, "how to define" the problem statement, or "how to ideate" to come up with solution alternatives, etc. They also lack an understanding of specific problem-solving tools and techniques that can be used along with the design thinking process. It is essential to conduct a comprehensive skilling session on problem-solving tools & techniques for ATL students.
However, merely conducting skilling sessions on design-thinking, problem-solving or innovating is not enough. In fact, most traditional skilling programs fail to achieve their objectives as they involve intense learning over a short-duration of time. Most students find it challenging to absorb a lot of new information in a short span of time. Moreover, they cannot retain knowledge of a subject for which they haven't felt a need yet. The net result is, most students forget what they learnt a few days or weeks after the training program is over. For skilling to be effective, it has to be a slow and steady process. Skilling on problem-solving tools & techniques has to happen over a period of time with learning content readily available for students to make use of - as and when they need them.
Flash cards are simple, but very effective learning aids that can be provided for ATL students so that they can acquire knowledge of problem-solving tools & techniques as and when they need them and at their own pace.
Create interactive Flash Cards with QR Codes that provide tidbits of information, learning resources, tips & suggestions, and examples on problem-solving tools & techniques. ATL students can refer to these flash cards as and when they need them. Students can scan the QR codes on a Flash Card to view online tutorials, videos, samples, or download templates. Flash Cards makes it possible for students to have all the information they need at their finger tips - as and when they need them. The skilling then becomes lot more effective than traditional training programs.
For e.g., we can create interactive Flash Cards to equip ATL students in problem-solving tools such as:
Observation Chart
Inference Chart
Interview Questionnaire
User Persona
Day-in-the-Life Scenario
Comparison Chart
Experience Log
Empathy Map
Research Report
Point-of-View Statement
Products & Services Evaluation Sheet
Technology Evaluation Sheet
Mind Map
Prioritization Grid
Decision Matrix
Solution One-Pager
Prototyping Resources
Prototyping Tools
User Test Plan
User Test Report
User Feedback Form
Competition Analysis Matrix
Business Model Canvas
The following online tools can be used for creating interactive flash cards:
Canva or Google Slides for creating flash cards.
QRCodeMonkey for creating QR codes to go with the flash cards.
In the below deck, you will find 28 interactive Flash cards that provide tidbits of information on Problem-solving & Innovating tools. Every flash card in the deck also contain QR codes, scanning which will open additional content & resources from online sources.
Have each Flash Card printed on an A4 or bigger sized poster-paper. Have them laminated if possible.
Place the Flash Cards in a designated area (e.g., Innovator's Station) in your ATL.
Students can refer to the Flash Cards to learn the art & rigor of problem-solving & innovating.
Role of School Management: Deploy interactive Flash Cards on Problem-solving & Innovating tools in your ATL.
Role of Students: Make use of the interactive Flash cards to learn the art & rigor of problem-solving & innovating at you own pace.
Role of Mentor(s): Create interactive Flash Cards on Problem-solving & Innovating tools for the benefit of ATL students.
Role of ATL In-charge: Ensure that interactive Flash Cards on Problem-solving & Innovating tools are available in the ATL at the designated area (e.g., Innovator's Station) within the ATL.
Create interactive Flash Cards on Problem-solving & Innovating tools and deploy them in your ATL. Encourage student innovators to make use of the flash cards to learn the art & rigor of problem-solving & innovating. Submit the link / screenshot(s) / video-recording of the interactive Flash Cards deployed at your ATL.
