I'm Assistant Professor and group leader at the Department of Development and Regeneration, KU Leuven, Belgium.
My research focuses on the diagnosis and characterisation of inherited metabolic disorders. Through studying these diseases, we can both help the affected patients and reveal completely novel aspects of human metabolism. Ths can have wide ranging implications for both rare and common disease.
Previously I have worked on improving the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases affecting vitamin B6 metabolism, which lead to a treatable seizure disorder. More recently, I have focused primarily on the characterization of Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation, a group of around 200 diseases with a complex and variable pathophysiology.
During this work I have been involved in the identification of a number of novel disease entities. One of these, DHRSX-CDG, has led to the revision of dolichol metabolism and glycosylation textbooks, and also provides multiple exciting research avenues for the future.
