Little Kids Rock

Music as a Second Language, and the Modern Band Concept

What is Little Kids Rock?

The Little Kids Rock (LKR) organization is a nationwide network of musicians and teachers. Their mission is to expand music education programs to be inclusive, innovative, and culturally relevant by using popular music styles like Rock, Pop, Latin, and Rap.

Music as a Second Language and Modern Band

In 1996, David Wish was both a guitarist and bilingual teacher. He observed that people acquire music in the same way that they acquire language.

He started teaching guitar the same way he taught his spanish students to speak English, and it worked! Today, thousands of LKR teachers are using his Modern Band idea in classrooms all over the world.

Modern Band is exactly as it sounds: A different flavor of music education that uses modern instruments, modern technology, and popular genres to engage students and expand school music programs. It is fundamentally based on human creativity, and focuses on performing, composing, and improvising.
