Matthew J. McMahon
I am a tenured Associate Professor of Economics at West Chester University (WCU), and I was previously an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. My main research interests are Behavioral Economics and Environmental & Public Economics, though my teaching experience is much wider – including experience with all sizes of face-to-face and online courses. I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a PhD in Economics in 2015 (Advisor: William S. Neilson) and Appalachian State University with a BA in Economics and a BS in Mathematics in 2010. I live in South Philadelphia with my wife, our daughter, and our street cat, Cosmo. Outside of my family, I spend most of my personal time attending concerts, traveling, hiking, and playing trivia.
In my research, I use tools ranging from applied theory and experimental techniques to simulations and applied microeconometrics. I especially enjoy creating novel experimental designs to apply to areas in which experiments are rare. This has led me to venture into areas outside my traditional wheelhouse, such as behavioral and corporate finance. Though much of my work is not experimental, I founded an experimental economics & finance laboratory – the TREE Lab – in my first year at UA Little Rock to facilitate my experimental work. Additionally, my work with the Baker Energy and Environment Forum at the University of Tennessee spurred in me an early interest in interdisciplinary work. This interest has led to collaborations with faculty in many areas, from supply chain management to meteorology.
Across my time at West Chester, UA Little Rock, and Tennessee, I've taught courses ranging from the senior level to the introductory level, with class sizes ranging from 12 to 200, and I've taught both online and traditional face-to-face courses. These include 400- and 300-level Environmental Economics, 300-level Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, 300-level Labor Economics, Intermediate Micro, Intermediate Macro, and Micro/Macro Principles – both separately and as a combined course. (I should note that even as a graduate student at Tennessee, I had complete control over my courses and their content.) I have also taught a week's worth of guest lectures for both a 400-level Seminar in Finance course (covering behavioral finance) and a 600-level Experimental Economics course for PhD students. I was also the lead faculty sponsor for UA Little Rock's general interest student club, the Finance and Economics Association, and the WCU chapter of Net Impact.
Additionally, I currently serve as the Vice Chair of WCU's Sustainability Council, the organization tasked with improving campus sustainability and achieving net zero carbon emissions in the coming decade. This role involves extensive work with all levels of the university community, from our President & Cabinet to our Facilities Management Division.
