This recording is from a live-streamed gathering at Weavers Mennonite Church in Harrison, Virginia, on January 1, 2025. The singing is from the "Legacy Edition" of The Harmonia Sacra. The "Long Book" referenced in the above video is the original format of Funk's Harmonia Sacra, which had the melody in the tenor line, sung by both men and women (in the Sacred Harp style). The Legacy Edition, printed in 2011, rearranged the tunes into a soprano-alto-tenor-bass format, like most modern hymn books, with melody in the soprano line. In Goshen, we host an annual singing from the original book, also on New Year's Day.
Here are two recordings of Zerah, which contrast the original format (#303) (melody in the tenor line, sung by men and women) with the "Legacy" format (melody in the soprano line, sung primarily by women).
