As a counselor, I believe that is important to validate the client with positive regard and validate their personal frame of an experience, and that the counselor decided to take direction and intervention of the session/situation. The best description of this philosophy would be a combination of person-centered and cognitive behavioral. I think it is important for the client to have an empathic understanding reflected to them during a session, and the counselor to have unconditional positive regard for a person. In terms of unconditional positive regard, Martin stated it best “separating the deed from the doer.” However, cognitive behavioral interjections its influence in role of intervention with the client. If I were to follow the person-centered approach, it is upon the client to guide and decided the direction of sessions and intervention. I think the opposite should be true, the counselor is responsible for finding an appropriate approach when using challenging skills with their client to promote a positive change. A client will be more accepting of feedback and problem-solving tactics when their narrative has been validated and heard at the beginning of the session. Providing positive reinforcement and a faster pace, in my opinion, in comparison to a full person-center approach.
