Matt Gleeson

Igneous Petrologist

Welcome!

I am a Lecturer and Assistant Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. My research focuses on understanding the compositional heterogeneity of the Earth's mantle and the physiochemical characteristics of magma storage prior to volcanic eruptions.

My research utilises state-of-the-art geochemical techniques and new computational tools to decipher the history of magmas, from melt generation zones through to eruption.

I completed my PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2020, where I worked on the Galapagos Archipelago with Sally Gibson and Michael Stock. In October 2020 I started a research fellowship at Cardiff University funded by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, which I held until moving to UC Berkeley in July 2022.

In my free time I enjoy a range of different activities, including sailing, windsurfing, climbing, tennis, hockey and many more!
