Acclaimed pianist, conductor, composer and pedagogue, Giuseppe Martucci was a leading figure in the Neapolitan school of the late 19th century. His mission was, at a time when opera reigned among the playbills and programs of all theaters in Italy, to bring the Italian public closer to instrumental music. The success he found in Italy and around the world earned him a leading role both as an important representative of the European Romantic tradition and as a pioneer of Italian late-Romantic and post-Romantic instrumental music, becoming a point of reference for the next generation and greatly influencing the production of so much 20th-century Italian music.
To delve more deeply into his story, here is the link to access the video of a lecture Matteo gave about the composer in Kansas, entitled "Martucci: An Italian Treasure".
Among his instrumental works, chamber music pieces are extremely important. We can find different combinations of chamber groups, from the classic violin and piano duo to pieces for larger ensembles.
The Medhelan Duo would like to gradually bring these compositions back to the attention of today's audiences, also envisaging collaboration with other musicians for the large-ensemble pieces.
