Outreach

I initially worked with SciREN, the Scientific Research & Education Network, which connects graduate researchers with local K-12 instructors. I collaborated with Cedar Shoals High School's Carly Chandler where I created lesson plans, Data Dive - Urbanization of the American white ibis, for her AP Environmental Science (APES) and Scientific Research courses. This lesson plan incorporates my M.S. thesis pilot study data to expose high school students to real data and to introduce students to graph creation, including linear regression and histograms. The lesson plans are included below.

Before students are introduced to the data set, I deliver a guest lecture where I introduce the American white ibis study system and how I incorporated the scientific process into my project. Students are then expected to use the pilot data to create their own hypothesis and to create a graph to test said hypothesis. I then deliver a follow-up lecture to talk to students about their results and to show them my own results and discussion.

To date, I have delivered three in-person and one virtual guest lectures to Ms. Chandler's APES course and two virtual lectures to her Scientific Research course.

I also delivered a simplified virtual oral presentation to Clark Middle School students encompassing twelve 7th grade Life Science classes.
