Sampling an American white ibis (Eudocimus albus) juvenile at an urban rookery in Palm Beach County, Florida

Hello and welcome! My name is Matthew (Matt) Tatz and I am currently an Integrative Conservation (ICON) in Ecology Ph.D. student at the University of Georgia's (UGA) Odum School of Ecology. I obtained my B.S. in Environmental Science at Georgia Gwinnett College and my M.S. in Forestry and Natural Resources at UGA's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. To see my CV, please click here. To see my linkedin, click here.

My research interests include ecotoxicology, disease ecology, and conservation science involving birds in urban habitats. I am highly interested in understanding the interconnectedness between humans and urban wildlife. For more information about my research experience, click here.

As an aspiring professor, I seek to teach both STEM and non-STEM undergraduate students about conservation and I hope to mentor students as they navigate young adulthood. You can typically find me being highly energized at my 8 AM lab courses at the Science Learning Center where fun bird facts are guaranteed. To learn more about my teaching philosophy, click here. At ICON, I am co-advised by Dr. Sonia Hernandez at Warnell and Dr. Stacey Lance at Odum's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. Dr. Hernandez specializes in disease ecology while Dr. Lance specializes in ecotoxicology and were both essential in the establishment of my M.S. thesis, Investigating the Relationship between Mercury and Urbanization in the American white ibis (Eudocimus albus).
