Ever get annoyed when people don’t know what your department is about? It’s even worse when you’re unsure about it yourself. So, what exactly is Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)? What do MSE graduates do? Is there a real future in it—both in your country and abroad?
Materials Science and Engineering is the study of how the structure of a material relates to its properties, how it's processed, and how it performs in real-world applications. The field is broadly divided into two parts:
Materials Science focuses on understanding the fundamental behaviour, structure, and properties of materials, alloys, composites, and more.
Materials Engineering applies this knowledge to develop new materials and enhance existing ones to use them in industries.
MSE can be called the heart of technological advancement. From electronics and aerospace to construction and energy, materials play a critical role. Researchers and engineers are constantly working to make materials more sustainable, efficient, and high-performing. For instance, Gallium Nitride (GaN) is being explored as a potential replacement for Silicon (Si) in semiconductors—offering better performance with less energy loss.
With global industries continuously evolving, there’s strong demand for MSE graduates in research, development, and manufacturing sectors. Whether you're aiming to enter the workforce or pursue higher studies, MSE opens doors to a future enriched with opportunity and innovation.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at RUET is one of the youngest and most dynamic departments on campus—officially established in 2016.
Each year, 60 students join this close-knit community. Over the course of four years, they dive deep into the world of materials—learning about the behaviour, properties, and potential of everything from metals to advanced composites. But it’s not just theory. With dedicated labs open to any student eager to explore, the department encourages hands-on experience in department laboratory.
The department also offers an industrial training attachment in which students can get a real-world opportunity to step into industries, get their hands dirty, and experience firsthand what it’s like to be an MSE professional.
At RUET, MSE isn’t just a department. It’s a launchpad for innovation, curiosity, and a career that can truly make an impact.
We may be small in number, but we’re big in heart. Welcome to our MSE family at RUET.
