I graduated form Georgia State University in Spring 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. My all time favorite math class was probably Modern Algebra. I would describe Modern Algebra as taking the fundamentals from middle school and elementary school (arithmetic, algebra) and applying those tools and ways of thinking to more complicated concepts. This was fun to me. It felt like all the pieces of math I'd learned through school were falling into place in a bigger puzzle. In this class, I realized math was more than a school subject. Math is a language.
Before math, my first passion was swimming. I swam for Dekalb Aquatics and Decatur High School, and now I spend my summers coaching for Avondale Tidal Waves. Through coaching and teaching swim lessons, I've worked with hundreds of kids.
In college, I worked a Supplemental Instruction Leader. I led study sessions for calculus two and got to combine the teaching skills I learned from coaching with my passion and understanding for math.
Tutoring and teaching make me happy. Watching someone learn a new skill or understand something for the first time is a rewarding experience, and I am grateful that I get to make a difference in people's lives.
I can relate to the curious and self-motivated learner, to the under-stimulated and bored learner, to the anxious and uncertain learner; and to the confused and struggling learner.
I was a "gifted" kid, so there were times when school just wasn't interesting. If this sounds like your child, I can help! By guiding them through advanced work and providing them with stimulating problems, I can help your child fall back in love with the process of learning.
Because of health issues, I also had a nontraditional school experience that has granted me the unique insight to be especially helpful with children anxious about their school work. It took me a while to gain confidence in myself and my abilities, and now that I have that confidence, I can help others get that confidence as well.
