What is EAL?

EAL stands for English as an Additional Language.

A child is considered an EAL learner when English is not their first language and they use another language at home.

Being an EAL learner does not mean a child has learning difficulties. In fact, many bilingual children develop strong language and communication skills.

In UK schools, EAL pupils receive support to help them access learning while continuing to develop their English.

Many children successfully learn through two or more languages and benefit from their multilingual background.

What is SEN ?

SEN stands for Special Educational Needs.

A child may be identified as having SEN if they need additional support to access learning or participate fully in school life.

SEN can include difficulties with communication, learning, social interaction, physical needs, or emotional well-being.

Having SEN does not define a child's potential. With the right support, children can thrive, make progress, and develop confidence in their abilities.
