There’s something magical about watching kids light up when they realize science and math are everywhere- in pinecones, in bridges, even in dance moves!
This fall, with funding from the Vermont Space Grant Consortium, the Carpenter-Carse Library is launching a new after-school program for curious young minds: STEM Explorers. Designed for students in Kindergarten through Grade 4, this monthly series brings hands-on discovery and joyful learning to the library.
Created by Linda Segovia Wise, STEM Explorers is all about learning through play, creativity, and curiosity. Each session invites students to explore real-world challenges, experiment with ideas, and work together to solve problems- all while discovering how STEM connects to everyday life.
Our goal is simple: to help kids see themselves as explorers- as thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers who use their imaginations to make sense of the world.
Did you know pinecones, sunflowers, and seashells follow a secret math pattern? In this session, students will discover the Fibonacci sequence through nature walks, spiral drawings, and hands-on activities with natural materials.
Big Idea: Math isn’t just numbers- it’s patterns, nature, and beauty!
Can you build a tower with spaghetti and marshmallows? Students will take on a fun (and deliciously messy!) engineering challenge, testing ideas and learning how strong structures stand tall.
Big Idea: Great engineers try, test, and try again!
What happens when you keep cutting something in half... forever? Through games and hands-on candy fun, students will explore one of math’s coolest ideas- LIMITS!
Big Idea: Some things can go on forever!
Who needs a screen to code? Students will become “human robots” as they learn about algorithms and debugging through silly obstacle courses and teamwork.
Big Idea: Coding is giving clear directions- anyone can learn it!
