Math Mentors was founded by Bellarmine students Lewis Zhang '19 and Atharva Mehendale '18 as a way to extend their passion for mathematics to the rest of the school community. Furthermore, Lewis and Atharva sought to challenge students' traditional attitude of mathematics as boring and too difficult.
Math Mentors takes an innovative approach to student's one-on-one personalized tutoring. Usually, students are taught by a professional or certified math expert who are disconnected and indifferent to the student's frustrations and concerns. The problem with this is that these professional tutors often fail to diagnose the fundamental problems preventing student's from succeeding and mastering the math curriculum. At Math Mentors, we have students in high-level math classes tutor other students so that the tutoring process is relatable and the tutor is better able to understand where a student may be falling behind.
Students who received help in their AP Calculus AB/BC and AP Statistics classes received high marks of 5's on the AP exam and A's in Bellarmine math classes.
Math Mentors boasts the greatest increase in student's performance in math class just after two or three tutoring sessions!
