Mathias T. Dawit
Mathias Dawit is an engineer passionate about solving complex challenges and building impactful solutions. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience through professional roles, academic studies, technical projects, and leadership positions. His approach combines technical expertise with a problem-solving mindset to deliver innovative results. He thrives in dynamic environments where he can contribute meaningfully, collaborate with talented teams, and continue growing as a professional. He is currently based in Columbus, Ohio, but is open to opportunities anywhere that allow him to create solutions that have a positive impact.
Mathias has worked on several projects that have given him the experience and mindset to tackle highly-technical challenges. A compilation of his major projects can be found here and also here.
Data Structures and Algorithms, Database Systems, Computer Networking, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Analytics, Software Engineering, Cloud Engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, IT Infrastructure, Platform Engineering, Full Stack Web Development, Operating Systems, Cybersecurity, Computer Architecture, Assembly Languages, Microcontrollers, Embedded Systems, Electronics, Circuit Design, Lab Work, Research, Humanitarian and Green Engineering
Mathias has had employment with two companies, and one non-profit organization in Ohio. The first company is American Electric Power (AEP), and the second is RoviSys.
At AEP, he worked with the IT team on various projects that provided cloud-based SQL and NoSQL database services to 23 departments at AEP. Through these projects, he learned about virtualization, security, storage, networking, and data management on public, private, and hybrid cloud infrastructures. He learned how to create an API that sends data in JSON format from cloud databases to other software projects over a network, and he also learned about database monitoring tools which keep such services running and available as specified by a service level agreement (SLA).
When he was with RoviSys, he worked as a Computer Systems Engineer at an Amazon Web Services datacenter. He worked on managing and configuring servers, databases, networks, and software systems in the datacenter. He learned several of the services offered by AWS during this time, including EC2, S3, RDS, DynamoDB, as well as others. Additionally, he became familiar with monitoring tools such as Prometheus, and he learned how to integrate AWS services into CI/CD pipelines, and other technologies. Other activities involved capacity planning, hardware upgrades, network configuration, security measures, and managing power and cooling systems within the datacenter.
He also worked as a software developer with the SOAR Initiative, a non-profit dedicated to combating the opioid epidemic in Ohio. Here he worked on a team to develop an app that sends health and safety alerts to subscribers. He used micro-services to improve the reliability of the software product (as opposed to a monolithic architecture). Furthermore, he also created APIs to exchange data between these services, and he used 3rd party APIs, such as twilioAPI, to add additional functionality to the project. The development stack used was as follows: React.js, Node.js, Postgres, Heroku, DigitalOcean, Python. Additionally, the following tools also used: Git (version control), GitLab (CI/CD), Docker (containerization), Kubernetes (orchestration), Prometheus (monitoring). Overall, it was a great experience; it was very satisfying to see an project through to the benefit of the end user.
Mathias graduated from the Ohio State University in May, 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also completed two minors, one in Computer Information Science (software minor), and another in Mathematics. Mathias was involved in several student organizations, including Engineers Without Borders, Hack OHI/O, as well as Cultures and Travel Club, which he started with some friends in 2020.
