Notice that there are TWO variables involved here
The y variable = the OUTPUT function or the DEPENDENT VARIABLE. It is called the dependent variable because its value (the number) DEPENDS on the value of x, also known as the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE or the INPUT, because it it what we input into the equation to find y.
ex. If I wanted to know how many pairs of socks I need to provide socks for a whole class of students, I need 2 socks per student.
I could use the equation
y = 2x where "y" is the number of socks needed and x = the number of students
(a variable which I do not know/may change).
SO, if there were 20 students, I could use the above function to determine how many total socks I needed.
y = 2(20) where I have now replaced my variable, "x" with 20 [students]
** remember that 2(20) is just the same as 2 * 20 [multiplication]
y = 40 socks needed.
NOTICE that the number of socks DEPENDS on the number of students.
The number of socks is the dependent variable (x).
The number of students is the INDEPENDENT variable - it does not change.
