Hello! I am Carly Gonzalez, and I will be your instructor for Math 180, Calculus 1. You may call me Carly, Professor Gonzalez, or any variation that you prefer. I'm excited to welcome you to the course!
This is our Liquid Syllabus, a short and concise introduction to help get started. A complete syllabus is on the course Canvas site and as a Google doc. As you get ready for the semester, this site will be your quick reference for answers to many Frequently Asked Questions about the structure and expectations for this course. If you don't find the answer you need, please reach out to me. I'll be glad to hear from you, and I'm happy to get back to you in a timely fashion.
When you're ready to get started in our course, you may login to Canvas. Contact Canvas Support for help with log in.
This class is the first semester of the calculus sequence that will cover limits, differentiation, and some integration techniques. We will explore a variety of applications within many aspects of the course.
These classes will meet in MBCC 203 at Orange Coast College
First Class Meeting on Monday, 2/3/25 from 11:10 am to 1:40 pm
The class meetings have required in-person attendance and participation, but all class meetings will be recorded when possible and available through Canvas CCCD Zoom if you cannot attend on occasion or you need to watch any part of the lesson again.
As your instructor, I will be actively present in your learning experience.
I will create a positive and supportive environment where you will feel safe to ask questions and take on challenging material.
I will provide clear and concise content and practice materials that help you learn.
I will respond to your questions within one school day, and I will provide feedback on your exams within one week.
I understand that you are busy and that you have many competing priorities. When needed, I will be flexible to support your successful completion of this course.
I will treat you with respect and value your life experiences that bring you to this point.
I will continue and learn from my students to better serve all of you.
You will establish a weekly study routine (about 6-10 hours per week outside of class) that allows you to complete all assignments, quizzes, and prepare for the exams.
You will focus on both understanding the concepts and performing the skills of this course, aiming for your own personal best.
You will be a regular and active participant in our learning environment.
You will uphold academic integrity by submitting only authentic work.
You will challenge yourself to try new things, keep an open mind about mathematics, and recognize that mistakes are a vital part of the learning process.
You will be thoughtful in your interactions with peers, while taking extra care to respect diverse perspectives. You will support your classmates as you share this learning space and time.
I like mathematics a lot, but I LOVE teaching. I enjoy guiding students on their math journey so that they can realize their fullest potential. I am a firm believer that all students can be successful at any level of math as long as they put in the time, work hard, and seek out help as soon as there's a need (that’s what we are here for). I see my role as a facilitator of learning, and I strive to maintain a learning environment that is safe and comfortable for all, encourages taking risks in the learning process, and values collaboration. I truly respect and appreciate each of my students and all of the assets they bring to the classroom from their life experiences. The diverse students and backgrounds keep each class unique, interesting, and inspiring!
Math courses move quickly, and getting off to a good start is an important way to prepare yourself for success. Read this page carefully and you'll have all you need to start this course on the right foot.
You will use Canvas to log into the course and all of the course content.
This 16-Week course is organized into Chapter Modules, preceded by the Orientation Module.
Chapter Modules will usually open and become available to you in Canvas by the previous test day.
Each module will have assignments with staggered due dates; however, most HW deadlines will be on Mondays or Wednesdays, before the subsequent class.
The majority of your homework will be through Web Assign, an online mathematics learning platform. Registration for Web Assign is covered in your Orientation Module on Canvas.
Tests will be on paper during regular class time.
Access to OCC's Canvas course management system.
Access to your Orange Coast College email account.
Access to a Computer that is connected to the Internet for Web Assign. Here is a video to get started with Web Assign. (OCC will provide a limited number of Chromebooks, laptops, or tablets on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible students. Please visit the OCC Technology Loan Program website for more information.)
Put these dates on your calendar now.
Orientation Assignment and 1.1-1.2 in Web Assign are due Wednesday, February 4th. Registering for Web Assign is covered step-by-step in the Orientation Assignment.
Quiz #1-Getting to Know You Survey is due Thursday, February 5th.
Homework 1.3-1.5 in Web Assign and Video Notes for 2.1-2.2 in Canvas are due Monday, February 10th.
I've been teaching math since 2000, and in that time I've seen a few habits common to students who are successful. So here are my tips and I hope they're helpful!
Use Chrome as your browser. Your homework platform, MyLab Math, works best on Chrome. I recommend you download Chrome now if you don't have it installed already.
Log into Canvas and Web Assign multiple times per week with the intention to work on assignments, readings, lecture videos, quizzes, etc. It is beneficial to expose yourself to the material several times through out the week and not wait to complete all your work at the last minute.
Do your homework each week. In a math class, there is no substitute for consistent practice. And that's what homework is: a prescribed routine of practice.
There are weekly quizzes most weeks. Like homework these quizzes are there to help you master the material. Embrace that opportunity!
Do the Test Reviews. For each test, I will give you a review which will correlate to the material and types of questions you will see on the exam. These are priceless!
Communicate with me. If you have a question on the material, reach out to me either through the Canvas Inbox. If you think that you might not be able to meet a due date, contact me ASAP. We'll work out an extension that will support you but also keep you on track for success.
This course is designed to expose you to Trigonometry and thus better prepare you for Pre-Calculus.
Students who successfully complete Math 180 will be able to:
Evaluate the six trigonometric functions of angles represented in radians and degrees.
Solve trigonometric equations and prove trigonometric identities.
Solve right triangles and oblique triangles.
