About

About Me

Hello! My name is Kris Hollingsworth and I am starting this Fall (2022) as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Minnesota State University, Mankato. I grew up in the Ozark Mountains in North Central Arkansas, and I spent a lot of time outdoors hiking, bicycling, and hammock camping. I don't get a lot of time for hiking or camping these days, but I still commute to campus by bicycle every day (I'm mostly riding a custom fixie built on a Surly Steamroller frame, but I'm looking at building out something on my spare cyclocross frame for winter commuting). [More recently, I started commuting on an Apollo Ghost, as I found the electric kick scooter better suited for winter commuting!]

I will be teaching Calculus I and Calculus II this Fall, and Intermediate Analysis and Functional Analysis (graduate course) this Spring.

I was just initiating into the Project NExT (Red '22) cohort at MathFest over the summer. It was a great experience and I look forward to continuing this intensive professional development experience with my amazing cohort from around the continent over the next year!

I am also the proud pet of a Australian Beagledor (Australian Shepherd, Beagle, Labrador mix). She enjoys taking me on long walks, listening to podcasts and music together, and using me as a pillow. She says I am a very good boy. You can follow her adventures on instragram: https://www.instagram.com/gemmaisagoodgirl/

(Proving that my dog is better at social media than I am.)

Research

My research interests include frame theory, representation theory, and spectral graph theory. My projects also involve aspects of non-commutative harmonic analysis and information theory.

I’m currently working on problems related to graph signal processing and discretizing continuous wavelet frames arising from square-integrable representations.

I have recently been involved in the development of a new education platform, Doenet, which is designed to assist in developing learning experiments and analyzing student learning data. We're still in early testing, but I'm currently using it to create interactive preclass assignments for my Cryptography course.

You can find my CV here.

Other Activities

  • Most outreach activities are currently suspended due to precautions against spreading COVID-19. Outreach programming will begin again in the near future, and I will update this section with details soon.

  • In the rare moments I have away from the department, I am an avid bike rider. I have a custom fixie bicycle built on a Surly Steamroller frame and I am currently retired from motorized 2-wheel vehicles but enjoyed my 2015 Honda CB300F and 2017 Kawasaki Ninja 300. For some interesting problems related to bicycles and motorcycles, see these notes.

  • Additionally, I am an enthusiastic board game player—I’m particularly a fan of cooperative or asymmetric games such as Castle Panic or Doom, respectively. I also collect interesting puzzles (both jigsaw and brain-teasers).
