Banner image: Bubbles organize themselves to minimize surface area for the volumes they enclose. The double bubble conjecture (now theorem), proven in 2002, asserts that this optimization problem is solved for two bubbles in 3D space when their spherical surfaces meet at an angle of 120 degrees. It is an open question what the optimal configuration is for three or more bubbles.
