My name, as stated previously is Jason Thoma (Like Toe-Muh).
You can call me Professor, Professor Thoma, Professor T.
But Not Mr. T! Thanks!
My email is jthoma@swccd.edu
I have been teaching a little over 5 years now, I teach at Southwestern College as well as other community colleges in the county. I like math a lot! I like teaching it more though! My goals are always for you to understand the material being presented to you and use that understanding to build the foundations for your future, whether that is the next class, transferring, or your career!
I am a big reader of fiction. I know you were expecting me to like math books, but they are quite boring more often than not! Reading has become my number one hobby the last few years. Although, I still enjoy endlessly scrolling through the subscription soups (Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, etc..).
I like music. That feels vague. One of my former students who was a musican said the best thing to give an idea of taste is list out your top 3 most listened to artists at the moment...so I think that is probably: The Home Team, Blink-182, and Architects. If you know/like any of these cool! If you don't, no big deal! Everyone can like different things.
Rapid Fire Thoughts:
I think science is more interesting once you get out of school.
I think the Marvel movies have lost their way.
I think everyone is a nerd about something (maybe multiple somethings).
I think I talk too much.
I think you think I talk too much...
Maybe I should stop talking...later.
I like answering questions, so feel free to ask me anything about the class or anything that doesn't have to do with the class!
I have a cat who tries to do math sometimes. No seriously, this picture totally backs this up:
I will have drop in/drop out student hours over zoom frequently. The times are still in the works, but I will have that info for you by the first day.
I am here for you to ask about math, school, or just to chit-chat and help me procrastinate on grading your work.
I will also have in-person hours in the adjunct office of building 60 (second floor). I can never remember the room number though....
Or as is my preference, somewhere outside on campus around building 60. These generally are by appointment, but if you see me on campus shout at me! I will be more than happy to help. If for some reason I cower and run away, just chase me down!
Also, if none of that works or I somehow outrun you, please let me know so we can set up an appointment that works for both of us.
Our textbook for the class is this one: Briggs, William, Lyle Cochran, Bernard Gillett, and Eric Schulz. Calculus. 3rd ed. Pearson, 2019.
Although I do know where you can find a PDF, so feel free to message me and I can send it your way!
We will also need a graphing calculator TI 83/84 recommended.
Unfortunately, we don't allow the TI 36/ 89/ 92/ Inspire calculators for tests and quizzes. This is also true for any Casio computer algebra system calculators (These are called CAS). You can rent calculators from the ASO, and I have 1 spare calculator for emergencies. DO NOT COUNT ON THIS CALCULATOR FROM ME. Always try the ASO first in advance!
Attendance to our Zoom lectures is mandatory, when you miss a total of 4 classes or 8 hours of class time, you will be eligible to be dropped. I try and be as flexible as I can, so please let me know when you can’t make it and why and as long as we are in communication and you are not missing a bunch of class time, I won’t drop you. It is also your responsibility to drop yourself from the class, if that is your intention. Don’t count on me to drop you by a specific date. If you want, let me know that you want to drop, and I can do that for you on my end to make it easier on you! The Zoom Link Is:
