APLA is an AHRC-funded research project at the University of Sheffield (January 2023 to January 2025). The project team includes Dr Rebecca Ogden (PI) and Dr Saskia Zielińska (PDRA).

The project investigates adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) and young parenthood in Mexico, Cuba and Colombia through three intersecting questions: (i) how does cultural production reflect and regulate understandings of ASRH and young parenthood? (ii) how do cultural representations work with or against ASRH policy and initiatives by governments and NGOs? (iii) how do such interventions correspond to the needs and lived realities of adolescents, especially young parents? With each line of enquiry, we hope to expand our understanding of ASRH, teenage parenthood and to improve the impact of future interventions.

Project methodologies

Creative workshops with young parents in Bayamo (Cuba), and Cuernavaca (Mexico)

Workshops with professionals and policy review

Padlet research with young parents

Cultural analysis: representations of young parenthood, sexuality and reproductive health

In order to foster an interdisciplinary, comparative and collaborative approach, the project brings the three contexts (Mexico, Cuba and Colombia) in dialogue through the development of an international research network. Through a series of symposia, the network engages local and national policymakers, regional development actors, NGOs and arts organisations.

Findings will be shared via conference presentations, podcast episodes, a briefing document, a methodological toolkit, blog posts, and academic publications.
