Our Story

It all began in June 2021. After a long and wearying stretch of pandemic life, a group of neighbors were searching for something joyful—something that brought connection, community, and a little bit of harmony back into the world. Friends and next-door neighbors Lisa and Lauren had often joked about starting an a cappella group, and one day they simply decided: why not now?

They reached out to a handful of local women who loved to sing, and from those casual conversations, a group was born. The six of them began rehearsing outdoors—through warm evenings, crisp fall days, and even the depths of winter. What started as a musical experiment quickly blossomed into a genuine friendship.

Their very first performance was a single song at the 2021 Porchfest. Since then, their repertoire (and courage!) has grown tremendously. Nearly five years later, these women continue to make time for each other and for the music they love, balancing busy careers and parenting while keeping this group a cherished constant in their lives.

What began as a small spark of an idea has become a joyful tradition, a creative outlet, and a community all its own—and they’re just getting started.

Who we are

We are 6 amazing women from Portland, Maine. We parent. We teach. We sing.

Andrea

Andrea grew up in a big, musical family that sang together around the dinner table while her dad played guitar. She sang in various choruses and church choirs, and feels so lucky to be able to sing with her friends each week and ranges from bass to soprano. She is a mom of four, has a background in marketing, but recently discovered a passion for teaching and is currently pursuing her K–6 certification. Once she completes it, all six members of the group will officially be teachers! She is up for any adventure but especially loves eating ice cream, hiking, and biking!

Carrie

Carrie sings soprano and alto parts in our group. She loves finding harmonic notes to round out melodies. Her family growing up was musical, with a mom in a band or choirs and a house full of instruments, and now her household is much the same. Sharing music is threaded inextricably with family and friendship.

Emily

Emily's life has always centered music, from playing in bands for 25 years to singing every day. For the past six years, singing with the wonderful women of Maternal iNSYNC has brought her great joy and connection. In addition to her musical interests, Emily also teaches art, writes, paints, gardens, and is the mom to two awesome kids and two awesome cats.

Hannah

Hannah grew up singing in school and church choirs, choruses, madrigals, and a capella groups. She is a mom and kindergarten teacher. She has a contra-alto voice and often sings the lowest part in our arrangements.

Lauren

Lauren grew up singing in choirs and in musicals and harmonizing with every song on the radio. She fell in love with a capella in college singing with UPENN's Quaker Notes. When she's not singing and keeping the beat with this wonderful group, she can be found teaching high school, being a mom, reading a good book, or doing most anything outside. She acts as group tempo keeper and sings primarily soprano and alto parts, though she sometimes volunteers to sing the bass line.

Lisa

Lisa loves to sing. As a child, she performed in choirs and school musicals and sang in Colonial Williamsburg as a character interpreter. In college, Lisa sang with the a cappella group, The Dartmouth Subtleties, where she learned to arrange music and was the musical director. After college, she sang with, the Handel Society of Baltimore, the Colorado Choir, and the Portland Community Chorus. Lisa enjoys arranging songs and singing whatever parts are available to her, especially if they're in the soprano range. She's a mom of three, a teacher, and a lover of the outdoors.
