Uncle Ssema introduced me to his home and family over the span of several different trips. Andrew Mwesige, another friend in Busoga, did the same. I met their families and friends in Kyaggwe County and Namutumba District, from Nakifuma in the heart of Buganda to Nawandyo deep in Basiki land, where they taught me so much about drumming and song, ritual practice, and the basic way of being-in-the-world for rural Ugandans.

In addition to gathering data on the itineraries of the matatu routes, ITDP and the Makerere University students carried out three surveys focused on the quantity of people using the system. The surveys collected data on the passenger volumes and demand on the major corridors in the city by evaluating how many passengers get on and off a matatu or bus at each stop along the route, how many vehicles operate on the major roads, how full each vehicle is, and how many passengers needed to transfer between routes during their commute.

Almost instantaneously, a well-dressed and seemingly professional guy called Jean-Paul showed up to escort me to the border. I showed him the ticket I had already paid for and he said he would be paying for my transport fare to the bus (which he did). Jean-Paul and I each took a motor bike to the matatu stand, where a minibus was waiting to fill before heading for the border. It was approximately a 15 minute drive.

We found a taxi or matatu as the white minibuses are called loading up and about half full. The driver a mature man called Vincent Okello was sitting at the wheel listening to some lively Acholi music and there were a couple of boda drivers hanging around appreciating the music.

Initially, Easy Matatu was started to solve a simple transportation problem. How do I get to work on time? How do I get back home predictably? I live in Entebbe, which is located 34 kilometres from the city, and I have to commute in and out of the city every day. For anyone who lives that far out, traveling is extremely hectic. To get to work on time, you have to be up before the crack of dawn, or you will be late. You also have to contend with long queues and literally have to fight at the bus terminal just to get a seat because there are not enough matatus during rush hours.

The second demographic that we are impacting is the matatu drivers themselves, who are primarily male. Prior to working for Easy Matutu, most drivers were undereducated and untrained and operated in an extremely stressful environment with daily targets that they had to meet to be able to get a wage. Our business model aims to flip this as we now engage them as drivers and use our platform to pull customers which makes their jobs easier, especially during peak hours.

My matatuest day so far was when my Alanna and I decided to leave Kenya (due to overpriced campgrounds and beer) and head to Uganda. This consisted of five matatus in a row and took about 12 hours. We were actually two matatu rides short of our destination but it was getting late so we decided to spend the night in Tororo and continue on in the morning. 17dc91bb1f
