The authors present a method for generating and fabricating 3D-printed joints for incorporation into woodworking which they argue will “liberate contemporary woodworkers” from the constraints of conventional joint creation and support new design affordances. To this end, they present evidence of the effectiveness of their technique across a range of dimensions: the robustness and strength of the varying joint connection, the semi-automated software workflow for generating joint geometry, the aesthetic potential of the joints through a series of design examples, and feedback from professional carpenters. In your opinion, which of these dimensions presents the strongest case for the benefits of digital joinery over traditional approaches and why? Discuss your argument in relation to your own current experience with using CAD/Rhino/Grasshopper, and making physical objects.

Create a “Kit” of laser cut Press-Fit Parts
Design a set of laser cut components that either fit together or fit onto existing materials (cardboard, dowels, pins, arbitrary objects in your home).
Use Fusion 360 to design a set of mating joints with variable tolerances and print a test set to check for fit.
Use your testing to determine the proper tolerances and fit for your final parts, and print a set.
