It's that time of year again. The time of year when I can be found traipsing the aisles of the supermarket in need of marjoram and micro herbs. Because it's MasterChef okay, and I am inspired.

This is usually met with a mixed response from my family who have to endure a rogue menu that ranges from sea urchin to orange cake. And, of course, on the nights when I can't bring myself to pull out the stand mixer with the pasta attachment, the best I can offer is toast.

Week one of MasterChef has been different this year. We are coming to terms with losing host Jock Zonfrillo and for many fans, it's too hard to watch.

Over the years I have attempted to cook dozens of MasterChef recipes and the show has influenced me to purchase far too many Kitchen Aid products. In short: I'm committed.

This year is no different - a fresh batch of amateur cooks are in the kitchen, learning, failing and crying over spinach and mushrooms. So let's get into it.

First up, Borscht and Ukrainian Pampushky. This was made by contestant Larissa Sewell and was the favourite dish in episode one. Beef stew with some beetroot. What could go wrong?

There were some close calls but I am chalking these four recipes up as a win. I'm excited/terrified to see what culinary delights we face next week.

The first elimination episode of MasterChef Australia airs tonight on Channel 10.

And that is the nature of my latest book, Classic. It's a nod to the recipes that have meant something to me and the people I love to cook for, and the anticipation of cooking for them again. No matter how many years have passed, what food trends come and go, or what age and stage we are at, these are the dishes that I return to. Dishes for celebrating, dishes for comfort, dishes for quick and simple nourishment.

Hi Nagi. I love all your recipes and planning to try this one for a lunch in the next few days.I am planning to increase it to 2.5kg of cheeks. How much more should I increase the cooking time in a slow cooker/oven? thanks.

Number 2. How much help are they allowed from recipe books, blogs and the internet? Once a challenge is announced, contestants are not allowed to look up recipes. Their food and cooking knowledge needs to be sound enough so that they can create dishes then and there. They have no access to cookbooks or internet whilst in the MasterChef kitchen during a challenge although they are given a pen and pad to jot down notes while cooking in the kitchen. The only time recipes are available to the contestants is when they are undertaking a Pressure Test challenge - that is, recreating a dish from a well-known chef.

One day, Disha, a friend of mine, made this cake for her boss and I got to taste some of it too. It was delicious. She claimed this was her first time baking a cake and she had done a fabulous job so I was even more interested. I have a lot of first-time bakers asking me for cake recipes and although everything I bake is the easiest possible bakes, this testimonial is from a first-time baker.

Hi Nags,

Can I bake this cake in a pressure cooker? Will it turn out to be the same? I have tried your cooker cake recipes n it was awesome. Planning to make this cake but I dont own an oven or microwave.

I chose vanilla panna cotta in the end as it is something I had planned on making for a long time. It is also one of the desserts on my list of recipes to make. Looking back at the list it strikes me that I have actually made a lot more of the desserts than savoury dishes. I'll have to put that right after Masterchef finishes I think.

Or how about mango parfait with lime ginger jelly? white chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce? or pear tarte tatin which are all inspired by Masterchef recipes.
