Amazon’s AI Can Now Spot Scam Messages
Amazon is adding scam detection to Alexa for Shopping, letting customers check whether suspicious emails, texts, or other messages actually came from Amazon.
How it works: Customers can ask Alexa for Shopping to verify a message, and then the system checks it against the billions of messages the company sends globally. The AI analyzes sender information, content, timing, metadata, and other signals to determine whether the message is real.
Why Amazon needs it: About 360,000 customers contact Amazon support each year asking whether a message they received is legitimate. The feature is meant to catch common impersonation scams like fake order confirmations, Prime renewal alerts, account suspension warnings, package delivery notices, and job scams.
The bigger picture: Scams are getting more common and more convincing, especially as AI makes fake messages easier to generate. Amazon’s move is a practical example of AI being used for consumer protection, not just personalization. The same companies sending billions of messages now have to help customers figure out which ones are real.
