Recently, I've started using more and more Unreal Engine 5, in order to improve my knowledge of the engine. I've been working with “blueprints” to make games for personal projects and game jams, but I've also become interested in the “sequencer” to make animations and cinematics.
So I decided to make a cinematic in the Star Wars universe, and more specifically a space battle!
Synospis:
"Concerned that the planet Creshen might defect from the Galactic Republic, the Jedi Council sends Knight Anton Razah on a intelligence mission. Dressed as a clone trooper, his goal is to infiltrate the garrison of the planet's governor's palace in order to gather evidence concerning possible links between him and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. To reach the planet discreetly, Anton is escorted by the Shadow squad, renowned for its legendary discretion. But things don't go as planned..."
Pre-production:
Initially, I took a course on the “sequencer” and practiced by creating a first cinematic using assets from “Fab”. The purpose was to understand how the tool works compared to other animation tools I have worked with (such as 3ds Max) and to gain practical experience before embarking on my project.
At the same time, I started to look for assets related to the Star Wars universe, creating storyboards and writing dialogue to facilitate the production of scenes.
Production:
Next, I began setting up the scenes, then I started the animation. I divided my cinematic into four parts in order to organise my work and to be able to show my progress part by part (on the rigth, the second version of the first part).
Here are the four parts:
The introduction: setting the story and the main characters' goals, as well as introducing the disruptive element.
The space battle phase: featuring the chase and combat between the heroes and their adversaries around the planet Creshen.
The battle phase in the clouds: with a change of scenery, we are now in the cloudy skies of Creshen. This part also marks the resolution and end of the action phase.
The conclusion: another change of scenery, this time on land. The battle is over, but another is about to begin, as revelations are made about the identity of one of the characters and the objectives of this mission.
At the same time, I added voices to the animations in order to improve the rhythm and the structure of my scenes.
