As schools begin plans for starting in person classes we know masks are in important part of this discussion. Schools don’t have the funding to provide masks to children. Often family’s don’t have access either and struggle to buy even the most basic of supplies, like pencils, notebooks, and clothing. Our goal is to help fill some of the gaps.

As we all know kids won’t wear a mask if they don’t like how it fits. We will be providing patterns and photo instructions for those with the ability to sew for their own families or friends. These will be for 4 different styles of mask in two different sizes.

We are also seeking those who can join us in making masks for other students. For masks going toward donation we can help provide fabric along with pick up and delivery. These masks will go toward the schools and students in the most financial need.

We understand how worrying the situation is for families and the community as a whole. You matter, your kids matter, and your teachers matter too. Let’s come together and do the best we can for each other.

Making a Mask Suggestions

Pick fabrics that are tightly woven, not knit like a jersey, or fuzzy like polar fleece.
Stretchy fabric is often hard to use
Quilting Cotton is usually a good choice, rather than heavy canvas or light gauge
Don’t use waterproof materials, Rayon, or Polyester. They can melt in the a hot wash cycle
Chose two different patterns so the inside and outside can be quickly determined
Wash all fabric before starting to sew, to remove any chemicals, and account for any shrinking

Consejos para hacer su propio cubrebocas

Busque telas que sean compactas, no se recomienda tejido tipo camiseta o jersey, tampoco nada voluminoso o caliente como el polar o la franela
La tela stretch y/o tejida no siempre es fácil de coser con máquinas caseras
La tela 100% algodón (quilting cotton) es la mejor opción ya que es ligera, a
diferencia de otros tipos más pesados o incluso delgados y “transparentes”
No use materiales a prueba de agua como rayón o poliéster ya que podrían dañarse
o quemarse al usar agua caliente, necesaria para una buena desinfección
Escoja dos diferentes estampados o colores para utilizar uno en el exterior y otro en
la capa interior y así poderlos diferenciar con facilidad
Lave toda la tela con agua caliente antes de empezar a coser, ésto ayuda a remover
cualquier químico que se use para hacer la tela y también porque la tela normalmente se encoge un poco.
