The Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club proudly partners with the Laurel Volunteer Examiner (VE) Team to help new and experienced amateur radio operators earn or upgrade their FCC Amateur Radio License.

While examinations are administered by the Laurel VE Team, the Maryland Mobileers are committed to helping prospective operators prepare for success and welcoming newly licensed hams into our club and on the air.

Please Note: Due to the New Year's Day, Independence Day (July 4), and Labor Day holidays, there are no Volunteer Examiner (VE) test sessions held during the months of January, July, or September.

Whether you are interested in emergency communications, public service events, repeaters, satellites, digital modes, contesting, or talking with amateur radio operators around the world, earning an FCC Amateur Radio License is the first step.

The Laurel VE Team offers examinations for all three United States Amateur Radio License classes: Technician, General, and Amateur Extra.

📘 Technician

The entry-level license that provides access to local VHF and UHF communications, repeaters, and selected HF privileges.

📗 General

Provides expanded HF privileges and the ability to communicate with amateur radio operators around the world.

📕 Amateur Extra

The highest amateur radio license class, providing access to all available amateur frequency privileges.

❓ Do I need to be a Maryland Mobileers member to take an exam?

No. Anyone who meets the FCC eligibility requirements may take an Amateur Radio license examination through the Laurel Volunteer Examiner Team. Membership in the Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club is not required.

❓ Does the Maryland Mobileers administer the exams?

No. The Maryland Mobileers proudly partner with the Laurel Volunteer Examiner Team, who administer FCC Amateur Radio license examinations. We encourage prospective operators, provide resources, and welcome new hams into the club after they earn their license.

❓ Which license exams are available?

The Laurel Volunteer Examiner Team offers examinations for all three FCC Amateur Radio license classes:

You may also test for the next license class if you qualify during the same session.

❓ What do I need to bring to an exam?

Please bring:

Government-issued photo ID
FCC Registration Number (FRN)

Yes. Every examinee must obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN) before taking an Amateur Radio license examination.

❓ Is Morse Code still required?

No. Morse Code is not required for any FCC Amateur Radio license class.

❓ Can children take the Amateur Radio exam?

Absolutely! There is no minimum age requirement for earning an Amateur Radio license. Operators of all ages are encouraged to become involved in amateur radio.

❓ How much does the exam cost?

Testing fees are established by the Volunteer Examiner Team. Please visit the Laurel VE Team website for the current examination fee, if applicable.

❓ When are VE testing sessions held?

Testing sessions are scheduled throughout the year by the Laurel Volunteer Examiner Team.
