Scene 1: Scene 1: The show opens with restless customers at the market place searching for answers. They begin chanting “Shekels of Gold”. It has been 10 years since the star’s prediction. Young Mary enters to purchase sinew thread for Young Jesus’ torn tunic and is alarmed by the mood of the crowd. She completes her transaction and the crowd surrounds her as lights go down.
Scene 2: Young Mary is still upset from her interaction with the marketplace crowd. She arrives home and observes Young Jesus for a moment questioning what her role is in telling him who he will become. Young Jesus is oblivious to his mother’s conflict as he is playing with pebbles he brought in from outdoors. He is supposed to be washing his feet. Young Mary sings “Tell Him”. She attempts to repair Young Jesus tunic, but he’s insistent on gaining his mother’s attention. He sings “More”. The song illustrates his feelings that there is something about him that is—more. The scene closes with Young Mary covering Young Jesus with his blanket for the night.
Scene 3: Commentary scene between Mary and Jesus at kitchen table. They are reminiscing about that day when Jesus was interrupting his mother’s task. Through the course of their conversation Mary tells Jesus how he got his favorite blanket.
Scene 4: Young Mary and her mother are preparing for the trip to Bethlehem. Anne does not want Young Mary to go. Joachim and Jospeh have prepared the donkey for the trip. Anne’s recourse in making sure Mary is safe is the blanket that she swaddled Mary in when she was a baby. In doing so, she resurrects the Lullaby song that her mother sung to her. Mother teaches daughter the song and the tradition is passed down to another generation.
Scene 5: Commentary scene between Mary and Jesus at kitchen table discussing family and the love they share through mundane preparations -making sure the travel route was safe, the donkey was sound, the physical and psychological protection from the blanket and that behind all of these gestures is faith that the love from God is center of it all.
Scene 6: At the well, Young Mary confesses to Clopas that she is worried about becoming a wife to Joseph. Clopas questions Mary regarding her fears and in doing so Mary comes to realize that she’s not alone in her station. A messenger appears who only Mary can see and tells her of her fate. She is disbelieving at first then believes. The scene closes with the song “I’m Just A Girl” along with the immaculate conception.
Scene: 7 Commentary Scene between Mary and Jesus at kitchen table. Mary explains to Jesus her faith journey and in the course of the conversation they reflect on the deep faith Joseph experienced in becoming Mary’s husband.
Scene 8: Young Mary and Joseph are taking a brief respite on the road to Bethlehem. Dinah and Rufus, fellow travelers, ask to rest with them. Through the course of conversation Dinah believes that Mary and Joseph are evil since they refer to prior knowledge that their unborn child is a son. Dinah and Rufus flee leaving Young Mary and Jospeh with the realization that they must be careful in how they portray their role in Jesus’ life. The scene ends with the song “Light of the Star”.
Scene 9: Commentary scene between Mary and Jesus at kitchen table discussing the uncertainty of keeping Young Jesus safe and the reliance on the faith that he would be safe. Mary relates to Jesus her doubts as to what level of faith Jospeh would be able to carry.
Scene 10: The scene opens with Joachim interrogating Mary on the Roman soldier was that raped his daughter. Mary vehemently denies that such a man exists. Anne, witnessing Joachim’s intention of striking Young Mary, intervenes. Joseph enters with his decision regarding their wedding/marriage. Anne and Joachim exit leaving Mary alone with Joesph. He is angry and hurt as to Young Mary’s behavior. Joseph begins to interrogate Young Mary. She begs Joseph to not abandon her. She falls to the floor pleading. Joseph hears music and has an epiphany. He believes Mary’s story. He announces to the family that the wedding will take place.
Scene 11: Commentary scene between Mary and Jesus at the kitchen table discussing how her life changed once they were married. Mary relays the story of when she and her mother walked in on Joachim and Joseph in the middle of singing in the work shop.
Scene 12: Joachim and Joseph in the carpentry workshop discussing mundane day to day routines. They discuss living with the women in their lives and break into the song “These Women of Ours”. Mary and Anne walk in and discover their activities and retreat without being seen.
Scene 13: Commentary scene between Mary and Jesus at the kitchen table discussing her non traditional marriage and the realization that it was the marriage that was supposed to be. Mary explains to Jesus the happenings at the planting feast.
Scene 14: Anne and Clopas arrive at Elizabeth’s house for the planting feast. Elizabeth is worried since she has not felt her baby move yet. Anne uses this time away from Mary to ask Clopas what happened that day at the well. Clopas relates that Mary insists she saw a man there, but Clopas did not see anyone. Soon, Mary arrives and greets Elizabeth. Upon the greeting, Elizabeth feels the baby move. Anne takes another look at Mary and something strikes her. She has a different sense about her daughter. She pulls Joachim closer and he notices something different. They sing “Look at Our Girl”. When the song is over the other party goers notice the change in Mary too. The ensemble piece, Do You Know What This Means is sung. The scene closes with a visibly upset and tired Young Mary.
ACT II
Scene 1: Mary and Jesus are discussing his plans for the week as he embarks on his ministry. Mary reflects on the three days he was lost and then found in the temple. Magdalene and Clopas enter singing “New Day”. Once the song is ended, they take turns trying to convince Jesus to expand his ministry. They assure him with their help he could expand easily. Jesus considers it. Clopas and Magdalene escort Jesus to the courtyard to show him more sundries in the hopes he will visit their cities. Through out the discourse, Mary has paid close attention to Clopas and Magdalene’s effort with her son and she wholeheartedly approves. She sings “I’m No Longer Afraid”. Jesus enters and confesses to his mother that something is different in him. He confesses to her that he believes he is much more than a prophet and he is going to the desert to be alone and pray on the matter.
Scene 2: Magdalene enters in search of Jesus. Mary informs her that he is not at home. Magdalene tells Mary that Jesus’ popularity is in jeopardy. He is becoming visible to higher powers and there is unrest. Mary points out that Magdalene and Clopas were the ones that brought visibility to the powers that be. Mary believes that this is yet another episode that Jesus will surmount as he has done in the past. She relays to Magdalene the circumstances of Jesus’ birth.
Scene 3: The scene opens with Young Mary and Joseph coddling the baby Jesus. Young Mary softly sings “Lullaby”. They reflect on what it means to be Jesus’ parents. Soon, the circus-like visitors arrive and physically remove the baby from Mary and parade him around the room. The ensemble sing “Sideshow Hustle” and toss the baby amongst themselves. Eventually, Mary is able to retrieve her son. The members apologize and relay that it’s only a matter of time before they return to take away their king singing as they exit.
Scene 4: Mary enters and discovers Jesus in deep thought. Jesus is in a state of confusion and uncertainty. Mary questions him further and is worried about his state of mind. She offers to anoint his temples. During his anointing, Mary reflects on her troubles, Jesus offers to anoint her. Mary reveals that she has not been able to purchase the Passover lamb. Jesus offers to provide the Lamb and she accepts. Jesus sings, “The Lamb”. During its singing, Jesus and Mary realize that Jesus is the lamb.
Scene 5: Scene opens at Jesus’ crucifixion. Clopas enters to inform Mary that the crucifixion has begun. Mary is distraught and angry. She questions the decisions from God that brought her to this place. She sings “Mary Reprise” The nailing sounds bring her to awareness each time she reflects on the circumstance of acceptance. Magdalene, Clopas and John enter informing Mary that Jesus no longer suffers. Mary sings “Lullaby”. Several bars from “Lullaby” are played. An offstage voice says, “Behold Your Mother.”
