This section includes the specific goals and objectives that were proposed and met in this virtual practicum, which helped guide the two projects that were developed. The first deliverable is a Grant Proposal Draft for people living with HIV/AIDS, while the second deliverable is an Injectable Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) PowerPoint Presentation. These goals and objectives address three of the MPH foundational competencies and two community health competencies.
MPH Foundational Competency #1
Assess population needs, assets and capacities that affect communities’ health (Planning & Management to Promote Health, 7).
Goal #1: To assess the needs, assets, and capacities that affect the health of the community members in Ghana.
Objectives: By the end of my internship experience, I:
- 1a: Identified the challenges and barriers and assess the needs to the HIV/AIDS Special Clinic by thoroughly researching peer-reviewed journals.
- 1b: Propose strategies for assessing select challenges, barriers and needs which will be included in the drafted grant proposal.
MPH Foundational Competency #2
Communicate audience-appropriate public health content, both in writing and through oral presentation (Communication, 19).
Goal #2: To communicate the information drafted in the HIV/AIDS Special Clinic grant proposal effectively in writing and to present information researched on Injectable PrEP in a PowerPoint Presentation.
Objectives: By the end of my internship experience, I:
- 2a: Presented the current benefits and possible impact of the roll-out of injectable PrEP to policymakers.
- 2b: Developed educational material to support my presentation to policymakers and to help promote new evidence-based interventions in the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in Ghana.
MPH Foundational Competency #3
Explain basic principles and tools of budget and resource management (Planning & Management to Promote Health, 10).
Goal #3: To create a comprehensive project and funding proposal to cater for the needs and expectations to improve the HIV/AIDS Special Clinic.
Objectives: By the end of my internship experience, I:
- 3a: Conducted a literature review through thorough research on the basic knowledge, challenges, and barriers in HIV/AIDS.
- 3b: Identified evidence-based and culturally sensitive interventions along with proposed budget allocations which will be developed into a grant proposal for funders to review.
Community Health Concentration Competency #1
Describe factors that influence the process by which people learn (Area I, Competency 1.5).
Goal #4: To present to funders to convince them that the chosen intervention will be beneficial and impactful to Ghana.
Objectives: By the end of my internship experience, I:
- 4a: Based on previous research, I will include a description of the basic knowledge and the challenges/barriers in HIV/AIDs in my presentations to policy makers and funders.
- 4b: Collected feedback from policy makers and funders following my presentations and included the feedback in recommendations for the organization
Community Health Concentration Competency #2
Design goals and objectives that guide health promotion and evaluation plans (Area II, Competency 2.2).
Goal #5: To create goals and objectives for the HIV/AIDS Special Clinic to guide their intervention program and later implement and evaluate.
Objectives: By the end of my internship experience, I:
- 5a: Created a list of at least 5 goals and SMART objectives for the chosen intervention program.
- 5b: Coordinated with the Program Director to ensure that the goals and objectives of the intervention program are in line with the organization’s mission.
