Numerous video games featuring the popular Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man have been officially released. To date, Spider-Man has appeared on over fifteen gaming platforms, including apps on mobile phones.

In 2007 Spider-Man 3 was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, PSP, and Nintendo DS, based on the film of the same name. It's very similar to its predecessor in terms of gameplay, and loosely follows the plot of the film, while featuring new secondary storylines with characters not seen in the film. The game introduces the symbiote black suit, which enhances Spider-Man's powers, and the next-gen version also features the New Goblin as a playable character in the final mission of the game; he was later added as DLC for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. The next-gen version of the game was developed by Treyarch, the other console version was developed by Vicarious Visions, and the PC version by Beenox. Xbox and GameCube versions were planned, but cancelled due to low sales for Xbox and limited resources for GameCube. In 2007, two Spider-Man 3 games were released for mobile devices, developed by Javaground USA and produced by Sony Online Entertainment. Spider-Man 3 Action was released early in the year, followed by Spider-Man 3 Puzzle a few months later.

Sony Pictures Mobile released a Spider-Man game for wireless phone in 2003. The game was such a success that a number of titles were planned to be released alongside the Spider-Man 2 film. Some titles were delayed and are slowly being released. Current titles include; Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock (May 2004) (a multi-level action-adventure game where Spider-Man battles Doc Ock), Spider-Man 2 Pinball (May 2004) (virtual pinball game, themed with Spider-Man & Doc Ock characters), Spider-Man 2 3D: NY Subway (April 2005) (the player acts as Spider-Man as he leaps, swings and soars through the city, defeating thugs and ultimately facing off with Doc Ock. The 3D games feature superior graphics and sound and showcase the advanced capabilities of new mobile handsets) and Spider-Man 2 Text Messaging Games (players must show their knowledge of Spider-Man trivia and navigate through a mission-based text game). Other hand handheld versions developed appeared on the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance by Vicarious Visions and N-Gage by Backbone Entertainment.

Spider-Man Unlimited, an endless runner mobile game developed by Gameloft, was released in September 2014 for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. It features Spider-Man, along with his other alternative versions, as playable characters. Spider-Man is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal.

Although Marvel's Spider-Man was Lowenthal's most prominent turn as the character, it was far from his first performance as Peter Parker, as this came a decade prior with ZEN Pinball in 2008. Over the decade that followed, Lowenthal voiced the character in other pinball titles such as Marvel Pinball in 2010 and its follow-ups Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles in 2012 and Marvel Pinball: Venom in 2014. Another noticeable appearance as Spider-Man came in the Marvel Super Hero Squad Online game in 2011, where Lowenthal also voiced other, more villainous Marvel characters such as Spider-Man's nemesis, the Green Goblin, as well as the God of Mischief, Loki. 2014 was the year that saw Lowenthal voicing the wall-crawler in mobile titles such as Spider-Man Unlimited and The Amazing Spider-Man 2's movie tie-in game. Much like its console counterpart where Sam Riegel voiced Peter Parker, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 very loosely incorporated elements from the movie but saw Spider-Man facing off against one of his famous symbiotic villains for the final showdown. Whereas the console version saw Carnage as the primary antagonist, the mobile versions had a showdown with Venom instead.

After the success of Marvel's Spider-Man, it was nice to see Lowenthal return as Spider-Man in 2019's Nintendo Switch exclusive Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. The Black Order didn't follow any of the events seen in the previous Marvel Ultimate Alliance titles where Quinton Flynn and Benjamin Diskin voiced the webhead. Instead, developer Team Ninja opted for a story that had plenty of similarities with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's then ongoing Infinity Saga, with Marvel and GotG mainstay Thanos and the Black Order appearing as antagonists. In 2021 he also voiced Spider-Man in Marvel's first mobile open-world action RPG, Marvel Future Revolution.

Batman's vast array of vehicles have become amongst the most recognizable in pop culture, having taken on numerous forms since the debut of the first Batmobile in 1939. While none have gained the same notoriety, there have been other superheroes with dedicated vehicles. Although it may seem counterintuitive, one Marvel superhero received their own vehicle as well, though not for very long.

Although it was never as practical for the hero as the Batmobile, Spider-Man's initial decision to use the Spider-Mobile was out of necessity, as the hero was constantly dealing with problems and in dire need of money. Unfortunately, in typical Spider-Man fashion, it turned out to be a detriment to him. The car has since appeared in a handful of stories, and even made a cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in Peter's lair. Overall, despite its short-lived existence, the Spider-Mobile left its mark on the Spider-Man mythos, though not in the way one would think.

Our understanding is that the story didn't exactly conclude yet, so this is a bit of a bummer for dedicated fans. On the other hand, it's not uncommon for a mobile game to just end without warning, so the fact that fans were given a solid three-month warning can go in the plus column. If you're a fan of the game, be sure to get in as much playtime as possible between now and then.

David Gosen, CEO of mobile firm I-Play, has warned that the mobile gaming industry must not fall into the same trap as the console industry and create content for a niche audience that grows slowly.

Gosen, who held senior positions at Nintendo Europe before moving into the mobile space two years ago, said that the console industry had failed for 25 years to successfully expand the audience of videogaming beyond a niche audience.

"If you look at whos playing games, nearly fifty per cent of mobile games players are female. The console industry has really failed over the last 25 years to embrace women as games players," he said, in an exclusive interview to be published on our sister site MobileIndustry.biz.

"Mobile has a tremendous opportunity to break out of what is a console niche environment for gaming. Over the last 25 years, 250 million consoles and handheld devices have been sold, but every year, 800 million mobile phones get sold. Tell me which one is mass market?"

"What the mobile developer has to do is make sure it does not create barriers for entry for consumers. We're starting to see that carriers understand that mobile phone decks are in effect retail stores, so they need to be merchandised and able to help consumers to the right content for them." ff782bc1db
