In my teaching I work to impart the course content alongside concrete skills and self reflection to support students towards their personal goals.
I have been recognized for my work through UIC's Communication Department's Graduate Instructor Award (2022 & 2025), a nomination for the Outstanding First-Year Seminar Instructor Award (2024), and an honorable mention as one of the top 3 graduate instructors across all departments at UIC, with the Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring Award (2024).
In addition, I have participated in numerous conferences to collaborate on and promote the development of anti-ableist pedagogies. For example, I participated in the "Basic Course as Blank Slate: Critically Reimagining the Foundation in the Foundational Communication Course" in NCA's Basic Course division, which received a Top Panel Award in 2023.
Furthermore, I've worked with other COMM 100 instructors to develop a policy for the appropriate uses of AI by students, and in Spring of 2025 acted as the mentor for 15 other graduate instructors as they taught COMM 100.
Recently, I have been able to develop and implement exciting and anti-ableist pedagogical practices for the course UIC's introductory course in social media and society.

Selected Student Comments:
“The instructor was one of the best I have met thus far. [They have] a unique teaching style that kept me engaged throughout the semester. [Marty] was not only helpful in class but outside of class as well. Made sure everyone understood the material. Probably one of the only instructors that grades and returns the material almost immediately.”
“The instructor is super cool, friendly, and down to earth. Everything is clear and straightforward, no tricks. I had enough time to prepare for the speech and quizzes. Again, best instructor!!! “
“Honestly, you can tell that Mx. Heath is passionate about teaching this class, that I love about [them] and the class… [their] energy keeps the class active for me.”
“Professor Heath was amazing and made sure that everyone knew it was okay to get nervous before giving a speech. The professor was great at responding back to panic emails and always tried to help. Overall 10/10!”
“Marty was very understanding and was great at listening. They also encouraged others to speak a lot and brought the discussion to life in the classroom. When I had a problem with a group member who had not done anything in their project, Marty listened and fixed the problem better than any teacher had before. They assured me that it would all be fine and afterward, even gave the student in question the opportunity to fix their mistake instead of punishing them. Best instructor ever.”
“The instructor had a lot of enthusiasm which made class quite fun. Not only did they offer their point of view on their experience at UIC but also brought in other students/instructors to share their stories which was helpful.”
