I am an Associate Professor of Economics at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. I am also a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before moving to New Jersey, I was the William and Jeanette Smith Associate Professor of Economics at Oberlin College.

I am an applied microeconomist who studies how political, legal, and public health institutions affect public discourse, as well as economic and health outcomes. Much of this research uses unstructured text data from historical settings. My earlier work focused on the long-run effects of infectious disease and the WWII internment of Japanese Americans.

My work has been published in outlets such as the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Economic Literature, and the Economic Journal. I also served on the Editorial Board of Explorations in Economic History.
