Marta Escalonilla is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Oviedo (Spain). Her research lies at the intersection of labour economics, education, and tourism, with a special focus on understanding how economic shocks, education choices, and gender dynamics shape labour market outcomes.
Her work explores topics such as overeducation and skill mismatch, gender differences in labour market integration, and the long-term effects of entering the job market during economic crises. She has also contributed to research on income inequality across generations and tourism economics, analysing tourists’ preferences, satisfaction, and price sensitivity.
Her research has been published in several international journals, including Applied Economics Analysis, Annals of Tourism Research, Applied Economics, Economia Politica, Tourism Economics, Social Indicators Research, and the International Journal of Hospitality Management, among others. Through her academic work, she aims to provide insights that inform policy design and improve the understanding of labour market dynamics in a changing economic environment.
In 2015, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Oviedo. I then completed an inter-university Master’s degree in Instruments for Economic Analysis, jointly offered by the University of the Basque Country, the University of Cantabria, and the University of Oviedo.
I obtained my PhD in Economics in October 2021, earning the Extraordinary Doctorate Award for my dissertation titled “Effects of the Great Recession on the Spanish Labour Market: An Analysis of the Young Population.”
I have been a member of the RULE research group (Labour Economics) and the R-EVAL group (Research in Evaluation of Economic Policy). I also serve on the board of the Spanish Labour Economics Association (AEET).
